Who Knew??? Interesting Lesser Known Facts About 'Law and Order'
Michael Moriarty and Richard Brooks are still visible in the opening credits. They are standing at the top of courthouse stairs at the beginning; the shot is taken from the end of a first season episode. George Dzundza, who left the show after the first season, was seen in the credits until 1993. He was seen in the passenger seat of the unmarked car that sped towards the camera.
Jerry Orbach tried out for the roles of Maxwell Greevey and Philp Ceretta, but was not cast. After appearing in a second season episode as Frank Lehrman, he replaced Paul Sorvino. Originally, "Law and Order" was to be set in Los Angeles and Dick Wolf had to convince NBC to film in NYC. After the third season, Dann Florek was let go. His character was resurrected for "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit". The typeface for all of the credits and titles is called "Friz Quadrata". A different typeface is used for "starring" and "created by": "Eurostile". The show's trademark dramatic sound is the combination of about a dozen sounds, including monks stomping on the ground. Jill Hennessy was unavailable to film certain scenes for "Law and Order" when she was appearing on "Homicide: Life on the Street". Her twin Jacqueline Hennessy filled in. In reruns on the cable network TNT, product placements have been digitally inserted. Coca-Cola is the most noticeable of these. The show's narrator, Steven Zirnkilton, only appeared in the show once, in the pilot episode. In this appearance he only had one line. "Law and Order" typically didn't give viewers much background of the characters. In the 1995-96 season fans enjoyed looking for subtle hints that Jack McCoy and Claire Kincaid were romantically involved. The fact was confirmed in an episode. Some actors have played many characters in "Law and Order". Edward D. Murphy played 12 characters in the first ten seasons.
