In all the history of the show, all the influences come up, but there's one that could be mentioned, a name which comes up sometimes, old time veteran characater actor Thurston Hall, who may have played similiar characters. You don't SUPPOSE...with the similiar name....?!

Ran across the great 1950s character actor Thurston Hall on an Abbott and Costello episode this morning and the same thought crossed my mind. Google search lead to your comment here. Interesting and I would agree.
