The Honeymooners - One of the very first sitcoms, this hugely influential show first aired way back in October of 1955. It lasted only 39 episodes on its own, but the characters continued to be featured (as they had prior to 1955) on the Jackie Gleason Show.

There were some OTHER "lost" episodes he did in addition to the "classic 39" episodes,and I've heard that shortly before his death in the 1980's,he said to Viacom,"either air them,or pitch (get rid of)'em."Viacom did the wise thing.Whether he was proud of them,I don't know. As to whether it was a mistake to end it when he did,I don't know.No comment about the "Color Honeymooners" episodes in the mid-1960's on "The Jackie Gleason Show".

Actually, Buick and CBS essentially forced Gleason to end The Honeymooners as a stand-alone series after only one season. So you'd have to ask if Buick and/or CBS jumped the gun.

Where did you find that Buick and the network forced the cancellation? I always understood it was Gleason's decision.

I always heard that it was just Buick (the sponsor) who cancelled it; not Buick and CBS.
