Pee-wee Herman Is Heading to HBO

Pee-wee Herman is heading to HBO with a special that will present his Broadway show, the network announced Tuesday.

HBO will shoot the Paul Reubens production in January following its Broadway engagement that runs through Jan. 2.

The special, titled "The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway", will debut in 2011.

"It's thrilling to have Paul back on the network, and it will be a blast to return to Pee-wee's Playhouse," said Nancy Geller, HBO's senior vice president of original programming.

The Broadway production opened at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Nov. 11, and is based on both Reubens' original stage show and his Emmy-winning Saturday morning program "Pee-wee's Playhouse".

...an updated version of the original stage production he first presented in Los Angeles, which HBO taped and initially aired in 1981. Now, 30 years later, we get to see the "Broadway" edition, with most of the same cast and several new elements [including those from his TV series].

Have you seen the new show?

It's just an updated version of the 1981 special? It's not brand new material?

...but the show is basically the same as when Pee Wee first presented it in 1981 (of course, since Phil Hartman's no longer around, it's "Cowboy Curtis" [Phil LaMarr- Lawrence Fishburne is tied up with "CSI"] instead of "Cap'n Carl").

HBO is airing "The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway" on Saturday, March 19, at 10PM.

Featuring Paul Reubens as the child-like Pee-Wee, the show will feature the return of many favorite characters seen on "Pee-Wee's Playhouse".
