When talking about influential sitcoms in tv history, you hear about I love Lucy, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Seinfeld, etc. Even though I am not a big fan, 'Friends' needs to be added to that list. Here's why...

1. It launched the careers of everyone involved and made Jennifer Aniston a movie star.

2. The Rachel Haircut

3. The opening theme was a top 10 hit

4. Friends was the whole meaning behind NBC's must see tv

Agreed but I'd say the major reason was because it was just one of the most well-written, funny shows with a great cast of actors/actresses that exhibited a great chemistry with one another. Not to mention great secondary characters like Gunther and other family members of the Friends.
