The fact that they're both from Rhode Island doesn't really address the question of why McFarlane likes him so much. I live in the same state as Rod Blagojevich but I doubt I'd cast him in an animated series if the chance came up.

My guess is that it's as simple as McFarlane admiring Wood's work and maybe just liking him as an outspoken and interesting person.
