Should've reflected that by having a more rock infused theme song to open the show OR was the opening theme perfect the way it was?
Baby, if you've ever wondered / Wondered whatever became of me / I'm living on the air in Cincinnati / Cincinnati / WKRP / Got kind of tired of packin' and unpackin' / Town to Town / Up and down the dial / Maybe you and me / Were never meant to be / Just maybe think of me / Once in a while / I'm at WKRP in Cincinnati. |

Since the theme song described the life of someone working in radio (moving from town to town and station to station) I think it's perfect for this show.

The opening theme sounds like the MOR (MIDDLE OF the ROAD) music that was played from the 1950s through the 1970s on thousands of stations across the country. Using your imagination, this is what WKRP must have sounded like before Andy Travis worked his magic on the format.
The lyrics accurately reflect the lifestyle of, say, Dr. Johnny Fever, who probably was "tired of packin' and unpackin', town to town, up and down the dial." (In over 30 years in radio, I ran into more than a few guys like him.) The closing theme is late-'70s screamer rock, so that was also most appropriate. (Of course, my favorite line in the radio-tuning montage that opened the '77-'78 season was "and they're solid plastic--so don't settle for imitations!" We had a few PI (per-inquiry) sponsors whose copy was every bit as wacky as that one!) |

Andy actually said "packin' and unpackin'/town to town/up and down the dial" in the episode where Andy & Venus were telling Mrs. Carlson about their 1st day at the station.

Definitely not. I worked in radio as an intern in the early 90's and it definitely fit. I knew many of the DJ's lived that live through all the 70's and 80's. It has changed in the 20+ years I was in that.

I LOVE WKRP in Cincinnati and I LOVE the theme song too. I think it's perfect.
[The opening one is actually one of my all time favorite TV show theme songs.] (The ending theme song is great too.)
