Movie Remakes of Stephen King's "Firestarter" and "Maximum Overdrive" Announced

Firestarter, Maximum Overdrive Remakes in the Works

December 14, 2010

According to Variety, Universal is going to revisit Stephen King's Firestarter and re-adapt the property for a new generation.

The novel was first turned into a film in 1984 starring Drew Barrymore and David Keith as a daughter and father - who harbor special abilities and are on the run.

A made-for-TV follow-up, Firestarter 2: Rekindled hit the Sci-Fi Channel in 2002.

For the redo, "We see this as a unique, character-driven thriller with a supernatural edge, based on a timeless concept and enhanced by recent visual effects advances," Martha De Laurentiis told Variety.

Also on the remake slab, Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive, the author's directorial debut about vehicles and home appliances gone bad.

No other details were provided about this update.

I love Maximum Overdrive, but not because it's a classic, but as a great "so bad it's good movie"....Not even Stephen King thinks of it as a classic, he even said that he learned his lesson, and has never directed anything else.

I enjoyed Firestarter, I think it's underrated.

I believe King's exact quote about his directorial debut on Maximum Overdrive was something like "I think I've made the modern day equivalent of 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'."

Though I generally find remakes to be pointless and worthless, in these cases, they might make some sense since the original films were both so godawful (IMHO).

Oh No FREE HAT!!!

AS you can see...every time I hear about a Remake...I'm just labeling it "FREE HAT" because that ep talks about how movies are getting redone and remade.

I'm surprised Firestarter never showed up on MST2K. That movie is grade A cheesy shlock. I mean that it the nicest possible way.
