College Football Firings: Miami, Indiana, Pitt...

There's a football saying: "As leaves hover over ground, coaches scurry 'round." Meaning we always see some firings and forced resignations.

I have no comment on the Miami (Fla.) situation as I know there are very high expectations for that job. But I think the Pitt and Indiana coaching jobs should not have been changed at this time.

Dave Wannstedt was forced out at Pitt. He had some bad losses but the record was not terrible by most standards. Unless they have a great candidate to fill the job, I predict a similar record over the next 5 to 6 years for Pitt. There was no need to axe Dave -- the man put heart and soul into the job and did it the right way. Jeers to the Pitt A.D. You forced out a top ambassador to Pitt athletics in D. Wannstedt. The successor will have a tough act to follow in that regard.

Indiana U. is a very tough place to build a winning program. They've gone through numerous changes since Bill Mallory. Lynch ran a clean program and unfortunately suffered some real close losses, near misses that would have improved the record. He deserved at least one more year as you could see that the level of play was rising and seemed to be good enough to turn the corner. Instead, IU is likely to struggle badly and decline as a new program is implemented and will take a step backward IMO. Jeers on the Lynch firing.

Pitt and IU are both great basketball colleges -- it's ridiculous to fire good football coaches who put so much into their programs, IMO.
