Cool Check Out the "Lost Enyclopedia" for Explanations on the Show's Mysteries

5 "Lost" Mysteries Revealed: Lost Encyclopedia Authors Shed Light On Lingering Show Debates
by Maggie Furlong
posted Dec 9th 2010

"Lost" may have ended its six-season run in May, but diehard fans of the show -- you know, the ones who paused their TVs, rewatched episodes again and again and blogged about every last detail -- are still debating quite a few series questions.

And just think about how many questions casual viewers were left with!

The Lost Encyclopedia offers 400 beautiful, fact-filled pages, dedicated to shedding light on the show's questions, big and small.

A true collectors' item, it's complete with over 1,500 pictures from the show and detailed explanations of everything from backgammon to the Black Rock, and Sun's pet Shar Pei to Sawyer's library of symbolic reading material.

Plus there's a pretty thoughtful foreward written by "Lost" masterminds Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.

We asked authors Tara Bennett and Paul Terry to choose five of the topics they covered in the Encyclopedia at random and elaborate on what details you'll find in the book.

Here's what they came up with ...

Juliet's Brand

Waaaaay back in season three, when Jack, Kate and Sawyer were trapped on Hydra Island they first came into contact with that feisty blonde, Juliet Burke.

Trying to escape Ben's clutches herself, Juliet proved an important ally to the threesome. Remember when she shot her fellow Other, Danny Pickett, so that Kate and Sawyer could row the heck back to the main island? That act of betrayal earned Juliet a brand from Sheriff Isabel and fans have been trying to figure out what that mark is for years!

Team "Lost" revealed to us that it's a fleur-de-lis symbol and the Encyclopedia explains an even more detailed significance.

Temple Glyphs

Remember those glyphs that we all saw all over the Temple? Paused your DVDs and attempted to work out what they signify? Failed?

No need: the Lost Encyclopedia reveals the translations of the glyphs on the Temple's North, East and West doors. And have we not mentioned that the glyphs on the heart of the island's cork are translated, too?

And the naysayers online claim this book doesn't provide new information -- translations of the cork, people!

The Sickness

The Lost Encyclopedia reveals that, amazingly, the reality of "the sickness" on the island isn't as simple as going postal like some fans thought.

In fact, it encompasses: a kind of spiritual infection caused by the smoke monster; some unknown consequences of DHARMA causing the Incident; plus, possible residual toxins after the Purge.

Each aspect of "sickness" is discussed in detail in the Lost Encyclopedia, with some revealing details about Dogen's confidence he was doing the right thing in torturing Sayid ...

The Purge

Ah, the controversial Purge!

Fandom has long been fascinated with the moment where the DHARMA enclave was wiped out by the island natives via toxic gas.

Who ordered it:

Widmore?
A sneaky, ambitious Ben?
Maybe it was Alpert
or even Jacob?

The Lost Encyclopedia reveals exactly who ordered that murderous event and why. We even provide the actual dates of the famed Truce between DHARMA and the Hostiles (provided definitively by the "Lost" creative team) so those confusing Purge guesstimations hotly debated for years can now be cleared up and mentally recalculated.

Hard core fans, that's what we call peace of mind.

Stuart Radzinsky

Mr. Angry, Stuart Radzinsky, had two distinct periods of his strange, short life -- his brilliant DHARMA years and his paranoid Swan years.

Fans were most fascinated with his unseen, erratic Swan years where he painted the Blast Door Map and lived with Kelvin Inman.

In the Encyclopedia, we reveal how Radzinsky painted his black light mural, reveal more of what his notations on the map mean and explain how he was responsible for those mysterious "Quarantine" signs that showed up inside some of the stations.
