TV MORE Reasons Why Darrin Doesn't Want Samantha To Use Magic...

I've been thinking. If you understand the point of the show, and if you've seen all (or nearly all) of the episodes, you will note that Darrin doesn't want Samantha or Tabitha to use their magic because:
1. He's afraid for their safety
2. He doesn't want to be rich and spoiled (Like Sheila Sommers)
3. He wants to give his wife and daughter things from the heart, not zap them up by magic.

And all sorts of reasons! Some of you may think that he's dumb for saying that he "loves her as she is", yet tells her not to use her magic. Well, let's look into that, shall we?
He is okay with his wife being a witch. It's just that he knows what can happen to Samantha and her family in the "mortal world" and he has no choice but to tell her to stop. And also because he wants a loving marriage. Do you know how hurt he gets when she uses her magic to get things or go somewhere? ("Charlie Harper, Winner" and "Witch or Wife") And in "A is for Aardvark", he told Samantha that he loved her and he wanted her to have everything. Let's look into that some more.
Okay. In the episode "Junior Executive", where Darrin is turned into a little boy, Samantha has lines about how he is "20 years younger". Later, when they're both in the car, Samantha has lines about him being ten years old. Okay, that episode aired in 1965, making the character of Darrin 30 years old in that episode, if he was born in 1935. That would mean when the Great Depression ended around 1941, the character was only seven years old. So that would mean that he was brought up to work hard, learn the value of money, be generous, and make sacrifices for the ones you love. And the memories stayed with him all his life.
So that's why sometimes he goes too far trying to give his wife and child things (Such as in "A is for Aardvark" and "One Touch Midas") because he's got a good heart, and he wants to give them things like he never had as a little boy. So when he sees her using magic to get the things she wants...it crushes him. And so remember, when he tells with her not using magic, it's like a parent reminding their child not to drink bleach. He hates to yell at her, but he has to because he cares. And when she uses her magic anyway, that's when he gets angry and says things that he doesn't mean. But he always apologizes and their love always shines in the end.

Well, I'm done typing now. I hope you all don't find this boring or stupid, it sort of took a long time to write.

Great post! Another reason that Darrin explains himself in "A is for Aardvark" was ego- an important thing for the 1960s husband (and he psychoanalyzes himself DECADES before pop culture authors declared him "sexist") :

"Why have I said to you, "No witchcraft! Don't help me. Don't help yourself. Why? I ask you why. Well, I'll tell you why: it was ego. If I couldn't do it, I didn't want you to do it. If I couldn't give something to you, I didn't want you to have it. Ego. Pure ego. Simple as that."

Thumbs up

Yup, Darrin wanted to work for what he got and wanted to provide for his family with his own two hands. Nothing wrong with that!!

Eek

Ack! Wait! I made a mistake...if he was born in 1935, he would have been SIX years old in 1941, not seven. See how good I am at math.
