Question Would You Have Liked to See Rhoda Have A Baby?

I know, I know, usually a baby born on a sitcommeans the end of a sitcom. However, I really would've liked to see Rhoda get pregnant and have a baby for the series finale. Anybody agree? Disagree?

Who would be the father?

Had she stayed married, sure I would of liked that.

Pregnant Rhoda would have been funny. She could have had a bad case of morning sickness and would have probably worried about gaining weight. And when the baby came, it would have been funny to see her and Joe wide awake for the two o'clock feedings. Brenda would have made a great baby sitter.

Not me. A married Rhoda was bad idea, a pregnant/maternal Rhoda would be worse. Viewers wanted to see the single Rhoda; the one who dated the one who was on her own. No husband or baby to tie her down.

If you had limited it to the series finale, sure. It's a nice way to end the show, with Rhoda moving into another phase of her life.

But in general, yes, babies tend to be death knells for show's creativity. I have nothing against babies of course, but once they are on a show the writers obsess about them, and soften the edge of the shows way too much. They kind of suck all the creative oxygen out of the room.

I don't know. If its done right there are few instances where it does work out, like on Family Ties with Andy. Maybe at the very end of the show if she had stayed married. Have her have the baby, show a few eps of her and Joe taking care of it and then the last ep could be them moving out and into a house.

No, not a pregnant Rhoda--esp. not while unmarried. I prefer her the way she is. She's got enough going on without having a child.

YES!!! If her and Joe got back together at the very end of the series, a pregnant Rhoda would be funny. They would have a beautiful baby! And Brenda, she would be a very sweet Aunt!

It would have only worked if she and Joe had never broke up.

I don't agree!!

I think it would be very romantic and realistic if they got back together, like ran into each other, got together for the night!! Than the next day they both realized that they still had feelings for each other and it wasn't just for sex/one night stand thing. And than when she comes up pregnant, they would realize they were still in love and it was meant to be!

The MTM writers would have never wanted to go there since they seemed to be against having kids and families in comedies.

It's not like bringing them back together and having a kid would have brought the ratings back up. The show would never have gone in that direction, though it might have been a good idea had they survived the 1978-79 season and got renewed for 79-80. I read in another post in this forum the writers were planning on spinning off Brenda into her own sitcom after the 78-79 season. Bad idea, but apparently that's what they were going to shoot for. Since they purged Gary and Johnny Venture and Ramon from the previous season, also taking Benny and Brenda out of the cast of Rhoda would have been disastrous for the show.

That brings up another interesting topic: I wonder what a sixth season of Rhoda without Brenda would have been like. They would have had to bring back Joe then because the cast sure would have been bare bones with just Rhoda and Jack Doyle.....geez. Oh wait, Martin and Ida would have been there, but without Brenda what would have been the point?

The wheels came off this show so quickly between Seasons 4 and 5. The show only would have gotten more ridiculous in Season 6 and beyond.
