Something I will never understand about the Fonzie character - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

If he was supposed to be so cool why didn't he have any cool friends like him? What cool guy just hangs around three nerds all the time even though he has tons of girlfriends?

I think every other cool TV character had a cool friend besides the Fonz. It would have been nice to see him with atleast one other friend instead of just being around Richie and his friends

Fonzie left his "Cool" friends behind when he quit his gang (the Falcons). And he was probably blackballed by the Gang for quitting which is why he needed to rely on Ritchie, Potsie, and Ralph for friendship. There is an episode later in the series where Fonzie attends a Falcons reunion so he eventually gets back together with his "cool" friends.

Who needs popular guy friends when most of your time is being with several girls a day.

Richie is also clearly the one he tolerates a lot out of the three. He's a "nerd", but not like the others, and is reliable and loyal.

I think he got enough street cred from the numerous people he beat up and the copious amount of women he dated!!

I always saw it as Fonzie was a cool loner and Richie, Potsie and Ralph kind of latched on to him. They're nice guys and so Fonzie was okay with them as friends. As time went on they became like his brothers, despite them not being as cool as him. Besides, Fonzie has no peers in the cool department. Might as well hang out with some nice, funny guys. When he's not making out with the ladies, that is.
