I saw the episode "Joey's Train" and Nell tries to hide the death of Carl Kanisky, but it looks like they hid the cause of death of Chief Kanisky as well.

What happened? Did Carl and Officer Simpson have a case and the criminal killed Kanisky? Did Kanisky have a stakeout with Simpson and Kanisky got killed that way?

Looks like we'll never know....

Was it ever mentioned that he was killed in the line of duty or was it just assumed that he had a medical illness.
The later would make more sense, seeing as how he looked
in his last year.

He passed away.

If you watched the episode "The Gun" Nell tells Addy...

"I kept intending to ask Simpson to pick up the Chief's gun before he passed away..."

They don't say what he died from, just that he passed away.

He was not as obese in season 3-4 and he was really thin in 3 and very thin in 4, but he could have had a heart attack (they can happen to anyone) or maybe he found out he had cancer after "Julie's Birthday" and it was bad and he died shortly after, or maybe he just died in his sleep. Maybe he had a stroke. Maybe he had a heart attack arguing with the family after Julie got married, or got sick shortly after and passed away.

He wasn't killed by a gun or a criminal, he passed away.
