Tributes are pouring in for true-crime author Philip Carlo, who died on Monday at 61 after a five-year battle with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease. Carlo wrote about mass murderers in books including "The Night Stalker: The Life and Crimes of Richard Ramirez" and "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer," about Richard Kuklinski. Mickey Rourke, the lead in the upcoming "Ice Man" movie, told us, "I was friends with Phil for 30 years. I never met someone who suffered so much and who refused to quit." The disease left Carlo paralyzed, and last year he developed cancer. His publicist, James Sliman, said, "Phil fought it head-on and was writing right up to the very end." His agent, Matt Bialer, added, "I never saw anyone with such fight . . . Phil couldn't even lift a spoon, but he managed to keep writing." Carlo's friends include Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Danny Aiello, Paul Sorvino, Joe Cortese, Christopher Walken, John Ciarcia, Vincent Pastore and Nicholas Pileggi. A funeral will be held in Brooklyn this week. He leaves behind his wife, Laura. |

What a shame. I'm sorry to hear about Mr. Carlo's passing. ALS is such a horrible disease, but he sure had spunk! Seems like he was determined to enjoy life and be productive as long as possible. I hope his fight can inspire others who suffer such debilitating illnesses.
