I haven't seen this show for at least 20 years, and I watched the episode this morning. I noticed that Freddie Prinze wasn't in it, and the opening credits went "Jack Albertson starring in", then listed the title, then listed the other cast members. When Freddie Prinze was on the show, where was he billed? Above the credits? And where was Jack Albertson billed, before or after Freddie?
Thanks. |

Thank you, TV Guy for your inquiry. In the first season of Chico and the Man, Freddie Prinze was listed as "And Introducing Freddie Prinze" after Jack Albertson's starring credit. By second season, the credits ran "Jack Albertson starring in....Chico and the Man.... Created by James Kolmack......also starring Freddie Prinze" on four seperate screens. Freddie Prinze was always given second billing, even though by the middle of the first season he was becoming a star of the show in his own right. I don't know for sure, but from all I have read, Freddie was ok with this, since he looked up to Jack and Jack was the veteran star of the show. I think he was honored to be listed after him, receiving second star billing by the second season.

I read where that all Freddie asked for perks & billing wise on the show was to get equal billing & pay the same as Jacks & as nice a dressing room as Jacks & also to get a new car. Supposedly when he hashed out his new contract the day before he died with James Komack, it got finished up very early cuz he asked for so little just the same billing & pay as Jack plus the car that he & Komack had lots of time left over to shoot the bull & play a game. Had he lived he would've been under a contract to NBC for 6 million where he could only appear on NBC shows. I wish he had lived.
