As an addendum there are representatives from Cosgrove-Meurer (the folks who own the copyright on UM) who visit the forums on a semi-regular basis and have made it clear to ownership that they don't want material they own the copyright on exchanging hands through the public forum. There is a message stating as much in the pinned topics above.

So basically the less said publically about episode trading the better it is for all of us.

if cosgrove meurer visits the forum, shouldn't they pay attention to our comments about how much viewers love their new UM?

LOL I was just getting ready to post nearly the same thing!

I'd be willing to pre-pay for dvds arranged in a chronological order with updates, as appropriate. I'm guessing other die hard fans would be willing to do that too.

But I just sorta get the feeling that the UM fan base is dwindling (with the passage of time and those weird spike versions) for CM to justify the time and costs of creating a proper presentation of the program.

They don't care what we think of the new version.

I've contacted not only them, but Spike and Lifetime as well and let it be known that we would much rather have the classic Stack episodes aired.

Even said that we would likely settle for the occasional Stack episode, if they still wanted to mainly air The Farina ones.

Not one of them had the courtesy to even respond back.

oh and while I already own the majority of Crystal's comps, if Cosgrove Meurer were to release official DVD's.. whether it be season form.. or whatever the case may be, I would be all over them as well.

Oh well their loss as they don't see the demand and potential money making that would come along with such a release.

I wonder if the thinking behind the spike versions with Farina is an attempt to appeal to today's crowd or if there's a financial motive.

Any idea if releasing the original programs with Stack would actually cost CM more (royalties to Robert Stack's estate) than hiring Dennis Farina to revamp the old eppies?

I think a good home for Unsolved Mysteries would be Netflix Instant Watch. They have done similiar things with other shows that are not available on dvd.

It should be noted at this point that even if Cosgrove-Meurer wanted to they probably couldn't release season sets in the original broadcast order.

As I'm sure many of you have noticed that when "Lifetime" syndicated the program there were instances where they chose not to syndicate a certain segment. For years many of us assumed that the reason behind these decisions were certain segments due to content were deemed "too hot for Lifetime".

While this may be the case for a few segments, in recent years with the availability of newspaper clippings and other sources of information forum members such as myself, Justin and crystaldawn have found out that there are usually very good reasons behind why certain cases never reached syndication.

In many cases these reasons involved lawsuits filed against "Unsolved Mysteries". The most notable of these "pulled segments" would be the one on former San Diego police officer Doyle Wheeler. One of the individuals interviewed in the segment, Donovan Jacobs was unhappy as to how he was portrayed and immediately filed a lawsuit against UM. This is likely the reason that segment has never reached syndication.

There are other more subtle reasons as to why certain cases were pulled as well. You may notice a trend in that many of the cases featuring children abducted by non-custodial parents and later recovered (Melvine Aprile, Jim Fontes) were never syndicated. The reason behind this is likely due to the sensitive nature of the cases in that once the children were recovered it was likely decided by UM and the families involved not to syndicate the episodes to allow all parties involved to move on with their lives. I also believe that something similar may have caused the case of Jon Yount/Diane Brodbeck to never reach syndication since Diane returned to her husband Chester after she and Yount were captured.

Another interesting case that never reached syndication was the case of Janet O'Regan. This was one of the first Lost Loves cases that UM ever profiled and Janet was searching for her long lost father Jimmy. Although Janet was well aware that she was the product of an affair between Jimmy and her mother she still wanted to contact her long lost father. Jimmy's children upon seeing the segment were horrified that their father had cheated on their mother and threatened a lawsuit. Obviously this resulted in no update to the segment being filmed despite Jimmy's family being located and also caused the case to be pulled from syndication.

The bottom line in me telling you all this is it would be virtually impossible for Cosgrove-Meurer to issue the series on DVD as it originally aired on NBC. Therefore having learned about all the lawsuits and such, I was not at all surprised that the official UM DVD sets didn't contain any segments that were never syndicated on "Lifetime". In addition I'm also not surprised that the vast majority of the "lost segments" were never revamped for SPIKE either. I think the vast majority of them have been lost to time for good reason.

I couldn't disagree more.

we have done alot of speculating as to why the various lost segments never aired on Lifetime, of which there are many, but it is all speculation. We don't work for UM, so we can't definitively say why certain segments have aired.

The reality is that alot of the "unaired on lifetime" cases remain unsolved. Which means that alot of famliies are still suffering, and alot of scumbags are still on the street. So when you say "the vast majority of them have been lost to time for good reason" partially due to the threat of some OOGA BOOGA BS lawsuit, just because certain people can't handle the truth, well, you are SADLY mistaken.

Well I really wasn't speaking of the consequences of the segments not being syndicated, that is a whole other issue entirely. I was just saying that from Cosgrove-Meurer's POV there are probably solid reasons why certain episodes were never syndicated. I think Justin may have mentioned elsewhere on this forum that he wouldn't have been surprised if when UM was first picked up for syndication on "Lifetime" if they already had a shortlist of segments which they knew they couldn't syndicate and went from there. I agree in that I believe there were a handful of segments that were just never going to reach syndication no matter what.
