McDonald's Must Pay Obese Worker $17.5K
Former Manager Gained 65 Pounds While Working At Chain

Posted: Thursday, October 28, 2010
Updated: 8:18 pm CDT October 28, 2010

Sao Paulo -- A Brazilian court ruled this week that McDonald's must pay a former franchise manager $17,500 because he gained 65 pounds while working there for a dozen years. The 32-year-old man said he felt forced to sample the food each day to ensure quality standards remained high, because McDonald's hired "mystery clients" to randomly visit restaurants and report on the food, service and cleanliness.

The man also said the company offered free lunches to employees, adding to his caloric intake while on the job. His identity was not released. The ruling was signed Tuesday by Judge Joao Ghisleni Filho in Porto Alegre. Ghisleni said McDonald's could appeal the case, and the Brazilian headquarters of the chain said in an e-mailed statement Thursday it was weighing its legal options.

McDonald's also noted that it offers healthier food choices. "The chain offers a large variety of options and balanced menus to cater (to) the daily dietary needs of its employees," the company said in the statement.
McDonald's headquarters is in Oak Brook, Illinois.

It's not like they force fed the man, or twisted his arm until he ordered something fattening. I worked at McDonald's for four and half years most of them full time so I ate McDonald's food 5 days a week 52 weeks a year more or less, and I weigh more now then I did when I worked there.

That's crazy talk about frivelous lawsuit. Can't people be responsible for their own actions anymore When I worked at a pizza place I was in the kitchen and bussing tables and I hardly ate there. Being busy I wasn't hungry on my breaks I only drank soda.

These lawsuits where people try to sue McDonalds for their health issues, and people suing tobacoo companies because they got cancer from smoking; these cases should be thrown out of court. If you eat a diet of foods that are filled with saturated fats and cholesterol, you wont be healthy for long.

Another dumb lawsuit. My friend worked in fast food for a few years and he said that used charts to tell coloring if the food had been cooked right. For the free lunches the man could have gotten something more healthy. Another thing to note is that people exercise activity should be reviewed too.

I can't believe he won. It sets a terrible precedent for others. I can't even imagine eating that junk every day. I eat it about twice a year, and I feel like dying afterwards. It's gross.
