HBO has Al Pacino moving from Jack Kevorkian to play Phil Spector in a film directed by David Mamet. Cameron Crowe tried for years to make a studio feature film with Tom Cruise playing the gun-toting volatile record producer, but eventually they dropped it because at the time they felt there wasn't a third act. By the time that third act arrived, there was no way Crowe and Cruise would have been able to deal with it in an authorized film...

Do you think Spector will die in prison?
If so...there should be a boycott in Phil Spector Songs! |

...as a human being, he's a monster.
Talk to anyone who worked with him over the years, and they'll tell you about the gun he used to carry in the recording studio, his mood swings, and his occasional bouts of irrationality. If you asked Ronnie Bennett about her years as Mrs. Phil Spector, she'll tell you they were pure hell, and that she was damn lucky to get out of it alive. Personally, I'd like to think the murder charge he was nailed on was his "comeuppance"- and that not even someone with his legendary status cannot go around threatening and trying to destroy other people's lives. Tom Cruise? No, I don't think so. Only someone of Al Pacino's stature could effectively portray and "recreate" someone as complex and violent as Spector's life...

^ You put it perfectly!!! If ever anyone fits the phrase, "a thin line between genius and madness", it's Phil Spector.

Well...just recently...Spector got beaten up in prison....
I also think McCartney is saying this..."Good! Since he ****ed-up a song I wrote"!... It's nice, but Spector should be imprisoned for butchering a song that should sound more like this.... (I really miss the Billy Preston Keyboard solo.) And if McCartney wanted strings and horns...he would've let George Martin do it! |

I have no objections in making a movie about Phil Spector.
Make no mistake about it, he is extremely unstable as a human, and at one time or another alienated everyone he ever worked with. If you want to get a glimps of how out of control he really was, read Ronnie Spector's bio. As mentioned above, and a I agree its a miracle she still has her sanity. I think in some ways he was worse than Ike Turner. As a producer and a musician the man is a genius and made some great records. If you havent do yourself a favor and get Phil Spector Back to Mono: 1958-1969. Its a four cd boxed set of his work with the Crystals, Ronettes, etc. It will set you back about $60+ but its worth every cent. |

I have also read Ronnie's book and it is indeed incredible. Thank God she was able to get out of the marriage alive and in one piece. She went on to remarry a wonderful man and have two sons by him. I also own the Back to Mono set and it shows you what an incredible songwriter/producer Phil Spector really was - and he had a tremendous ear for singing talent. I would say that in the 60s, Phil Spector was to the US what Sir George Martin was to the UK.
He probably WAS worse than Ike Turner - I don't think Phil physically tortured Ronnie, but he certainly subjected her to all sorts of psychological horror. It's a miracle that she's alive and sane today. |
