'The Dukes of Hazzard' Made A BIG Mistake Getting RID of Coy & Vance So Quickly! - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Now don't get me wrong, I was never a fan of the Duke boys replacements. However, with that said, they did enter the Duke Universe, so I feel it was essential to keep them a around a little to tie up loose ends once Bo & Luke returned to Hazzard County. Instead, they pretended it was some sort of dream or blurred reality. I thought it would've been interesting to see all 4 Duke boys on a mission together. Agree? Disagree?

It WOULD have been nice for all 4 Duke boys to team up for some adventure. Now Coy and Vance are on the Island of Misfit TV Characters along with Chuck Cunningham, Judy Winslow, Carl Dixon, Debbie Morgenstern, etc...

So they were brought on to replace Tom Wopat and John Schneider when they left over contract disputes, and then were just gone when the issues were resolved?

What exactly were the contract issues about anyway? Did Wopat and Schneider really want "to leave"?

First question - yes. When TW and JS returned, Coy and Vance were gone before the first commercial break and were never seen or mentioned again.

Second question - by 1982, the show and Warner Brothers were cashing in big time on merchandise - shirts, hats, action figures, toy cars, etc. TW and JS had it written into their contracts that they would get a certain percentage of the profits made on the merchandise because their likenesses graced the products. They weren't getting their cut, and then they walked out. They never wanted to leave - it was a matter of principle.

Left unresolved in the settlement was the status of Byron Cherry and Christopher Mayer. Alan Shane, president of Warner Bros. Television, issued a statement saying, We intend to keep them in the cast and take full advantage of the fact that they have created their own fan followings." But before the first commercial break in "Welcome Back, Bo and Luke", the new Dukes left Hazzard to take care of their Aunt Bessie and Uncle Albert, and were never seen or heard from again.

It's worse in the cartoon series "The Dukes." Coy and Vance are in the first season, doing some around the world race with Daisy against Boss Hogg. In season two, it's Bo and Luke there as if they were in the race from the beginning.

It was just as well. I don't think they had very many fans. They were sort of bland. At least they explained where they went and didn't make it into a dream. lol
