Post Spinning Restaurant Reopens After Hurricane

I don't think I would like a restaurant that spins. I would feel dizzy.

Spindletop Restaurant Reopens After Ike

Posted: Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Houston -- The Spindletop Restaurant reopened Wednesday after it was damaged two years ago by Hurricane Ike. The revolving rooftop restaurant sits atop the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1200 Louisiana Street, in downtown Houston. The restaurant is located on the 34th floor. It went through a $1.4 million renovation after it was closed by Ike. The restaurant opened in 1972. It has hosted approximately 1,800 marriage proposals over the years, according to the owners.

Cool

Revolving restaurants generally spin at a slow enough speed that you can't even feel it much less get dizzy from it. The only way you tell it's spinning at all is that the scenery outside the window changes.

No matter how slow it was spinning, I would still probably get a panic attack from being in one.

Yeah, you're right about that. You don't notice it spinning around much while sitting down in it, only when you look at the scenery changing.

I've only been to one revolving restaurant, The Garden Grill located in Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center inside The Land pavilion.

It's an indoor restaurant so you don't see outside but when you rotate past it, the restaurant opens up to the fake scenery that you see on the boatride. It was a farmhouse setting.

I liked it, wasn't at all bothered by it.

I remember going to a spinning restaurant on top of the Space Needle in Seattle. The movement was very slow - you could hardly notice it.

We had one of those Hyatts in Boston/Cambridge for years. Not sure if it's still there. Back in my single days, I went there with a date for dinner. I went to the ladies room, and I couldn't find my table when I went back into the dining room. It was a first date too.
