Hatchet II Being Pulled From U.S. and Canadian Theaters
Monday, October 4, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

Adam Green's Hatchet 2 apparently made some serious noise over this past weekend as Green revealed on his Twitter account that his slasher sequel, distributed uncut and unrated by Dark Sky Films, has been pulled from various theaters in BOTH Canada and here in the States.

An official press release is said to be coming tomorrow with full details so stay tuned...

It'll be interesting to see what the reason was.

Hatchet II Pulled From AMC Theaters After One Weekend In Release
By Katey Rich
Published: 2010-10-05

It was a big deal when AMC Theaters confirmed in mid-September that they would in fact be showing Hatchet II in more than 60 of their theaters, despite the fact that the movie hadn't been given a rating by the MPAA.

It's a major step for any theater chain, most of which want to play nice with the MPAA and also avoid hearing from outraged parents whose kids caught something as brutal and horrifying as Hatchet II on a Saturday trip to the multiplex.

In fact, it was apparently such a major step that someone at AMC balked, and Hatchet II has been pulled after just one weekend in release.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, the film's director Adam Green confirmed that the movie has been pulled, saying: “We woke up this morning and the movie was gone. I’m bewildered and confused.

Green has previously been a vocal opponent against the "evil" MPAA, and argued that his movie didn't even deserve to be released without a rating, even though Eric wrote in his review that the fill "doesn't know the definition of the words 'decency' or 'restraint."

Here's how Green sees it:

"This is not a movie that deserves to be unrated. It’s a very funny, silly slasher movie about a swamp ghost that’s killing people in ridiculous ways. And now it’s become, you know, ‘Banned from cinemas.’

I’ve lost 11 pounds in the last week from stress.

Green recognizes that, now that AMC has backed out, it's unlikely that Hatchet II will have much more of a life on the big screen, having grossed less than $70,000 in its first weekend of release.

But given that Hatchet did most of its business on DVD, Green is optimistic that the sequel will make it to anxious fans before too long:

I know that Dark Skies, in light of it being pulled prematurely, is going to do everything they can to get it to the fans as fast as they can. And that’s exciting.

I don’t really make hardcore movies. I’m doing a kids movie next! Hopefully, this is the last time I’m ever even going to deal with something like this.

"Hatchet II" director Adam Green has taken to Twitter to explain what's going on.

Here's what he's been saying as of recently:

"My contacts at AMC are telling me it was pulled but not for the reason they said in the press. What a load of bullsh*t."

"Check news for word on H2 being pulled. But note: they started pulling it FRIDAY. Blaming box office? We'll never know what it was."

"No more news is coming from our camp on this. It's over. Gotta move on and hope this doesn't ever happen again. We need CHANGE."

Adam Green, Hatchet II and I Spit on Your Grave
by Sean Redlitz
Sat., Oct. 9, 2010

At last night's Screamfest LA opening, we ran into director Adam Green.

His latest, Hatchet II, opened last weekend in select theaters without an MPAA rating but was pulled without explanation - under suspicious circumstances, and in some cases on its very first night.

We asked Green where filmmakers and fans of unrated horror can go from here.

"Between Blu-ray and DVD and all these things, there's a lot of outside the box things you can do too. Plus drive-ins, independent theaters. That's all viable, a lot of people have been doing that forever.

But there's no reason why a movie can't play in mainstream cinemas if mainstream cinemas want it.

I'm still kind of beaten and tortured on the ground right now. But I can tell you, if I feel like it I'm going to do the exact same thing again, and I'm going to fight them again.

That's what I am, I'm a fighter.

We need to change the system...I can't do it myself, but if I feel like doing 'Hatchet 3', again, I'm going to make 'Hatchet 3' the way I want to make and I'll fight 'em again and that will be that.

'Hatchet II' got severely messed with, as we all know, and it's unfortunate. But look, 'I Spit On Your Grave' is playing right there
[ed note: Green pointed across the lobby of the Mann 6 in Hollywood] unrated.

That's great to see and hopefully it does really well. Let's just keep it going.

The rumor is that the MPAA had a hand in it due to Green very openly criticizing them and their process of rating films.
