Orlando Sets Smiley Face World Record
500 People Form Giant Face Atop New Amway Center

Orlando, Fla. -- Say cheese! A new world record was set in Orlando on Friday -- World Smile Day -- as the Orlando/Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau gathered 500 people to form a giant smiley face atop the new Amway Center.

Local 6 helicopter Sky 6 showed the group wearing yellow and black ponchos on top of the downtown Orlando building. "With our world-famous theme parks and more than 100 attractions, we thought we might just be the smile capital of the world. Now, it's official," said Gary Sain, president and CEO of the Orlando/Orange County CVB. "We have a world record, and world travelers from the four corners of the globe told us that no other destination creates unique smile moments and memories like Orlando for families and friends to share for a lifetime."

The visitors bureau said people from all over the world, including Brazil, the U.K., Canada and Germany, helped set the record. The previous Guinness World Record of the largest smiley face formed by humans consisted of 200-plus participants in Baltimore. The Orlando/Orange County CVB's global marketing campaign launched the effort in conjunction with its "Orlando Makes Me Smile" program that began in April.

World Smile Day was created in 1999 to help people smile through acts of kindness. The Amway Center, the new home to the Orlando Magic, officially opened on Friday.
