Thumbs down Another Show is Canned After 2 Eps: ABC Cancels "My Generation"

ABC Pulls "My Generation"
Oct 1, 2010
by Kate Stanhope

ABC has pulled "My Generation" from its schedule after just two episodes have aired. The Thursday night drama dropped more than 30 percent in its second week to just 3.8 million viewers.

The series, starring Jaime King, followed a group of high school seniors ten years after their high school graduation.

It is not yet known what will take over the Thursdays at 8/7c timeslot.

"My Generation" is the second casualty of the new fall TV season.
Fox shelved "Lone Star" also after only two airings.

What's the point of cancelling a show after 1 or 2 episodes? Why bother with it at all?

It makes more shows to be listed on for future "Bombs of Television" or "Shows That Were Canceled Quickly" lists.

We will have lots more shows to discuss 10-20 years from now.. lol.

Default Keep in mind...

...that there are five broadcast networks, all clamoring for your attention these days. And nowhere is this situation more evident than what's on Thursdays at 8pm(et). From what I've seen, as of now, CBS seems to be retaining a lot of its audience by scheduling "THE BIG BAND THEORY" {okay, it's doing well, no matter where it's scheduled} and "S%#* MY DAD SAYS" {which is "holding its own"} at that hour. NBC's "COMMUNITY" and "30 ROCK" have their loyal fans as well, and that's good news for them. "BONES", on FOX, has its "core" audience, as does "THE VAMPIRE DIARIES" on CW.

Now, with all these "established" series opposite each other, it's hard for a new series, like "MY GENERATION", to find a decent audience (or "sampling", as it's known in the industry) from the start. Some network executives don't have the same patience they predecessors had, say, 10-15-20-30 or more years ago. These days, their "bottom line" is, 'If this new show doesn't bring in at least 10 million viewers within the next two weeks, off it goes'. And that's what happened to "MY GENERATION".

This happens every season, 'markway'. You wonder why the networks bother if a series like that "bites the dust" after only a few weeks? Because there's always the chance a series like that might- just MIGHT, mind you- become an "unexpected success" in the long run. It's a gamble, like your "State Lottery", Atlantic City, Las Vegas, your latest "office pool"...there's always a chance your series might be a "winner". If not....well, there's always next season.

These days, a "consolation prize" is a DVD release [provided enough episodes are produced to create one]. Who knows? "MY GENERATION" may find a "new life" on home video yet.

Because you can't hold on to weak shows if you want to compete with other networks.

Thumbs up Unaired episodes of ABC's 'My Generation'

Despite an atrocious promo campaign, 'My Generation' was actually pretty decent. I really liked how they used the documentary point of view as a storytelling device, and there were a few compelling characters fleshed out in the first two episodes.

I hope ABC broadcasts the remaining unaired episodes on Saturday night once college football finishes its run.

Was this show similar to the cancelled series from a few years ago, Reunion? Both shows seemed to take place at 2 different points in time, jumping back and forth, which I would think would make it more of a challenge to follow. At any rate, any show needs a chance to find its audience.

What I don't understand is, several of these new shows are getting repeated on Saturdays or on sister cable networks, which is a good idea, but they still cancel the show before anyone can discover it.

And it's not lik ewhat it was from way back when network execs gave up to a minimum of 6 weeks to bring them the ratings.

Viewers = RATINGS

Ratings = $$$

$$$ = BIG PROFITS for themselves!

"My Generation" Replaced By "Grey's" Encores
Tuesday, October 05, 2010
Pavan

ABC has scheduled previous week encores of "Grey's Anatomy" on Thursdays at 8pm for at least the next two weeks (Nov. 7 and 14).

This is happening because ABC pulled freshman drama "My Generation" after just two airings, as the second episode dropped over 30% to a 1.1 18-49 rating. 8 episodes have been completed for that series, so 6 are left to air.

No word if ABC will put it on abc.com or burn them off later in the year.
The series joins Fox's "Lone Star" in the cancelation column.

With 6 unaired episodes, hopefully ABC will give this show a summer run next year. I'd really like to see those remaining episodes.
