I always lean towards the original so I will pick Sonny Curtis' version as my favorite but I really do like Sammy's version as well!

I'm not a big fan of Sammy Davis, Jr. -- But this version isn't that bad.
Interesting choice of words he chose. Glad they weren't used in the show. LOL, probably would have been censored back then, perhaps. If the show had been done before the 70s, they definately would have to have been changed. Now, I don't mean the words are bad, it's just something they would probably have done back then. Also, Sammy's words don't exactly fit the show's premise. IF you understand what I mean. Still Sonny's version better!

Ha ha...that is wild, babe, and I mean that!
I'll go with the original, but Sammy's version sounds OK and is harmless. I do agree that the made-up lyrics were pushing it a bit for the premise of the show with our wholesome Mary. But I guess if you took Sammy's version out of a TMTMS premise, it actually did fit into the times. The TMTMS producers NEVER would have used that version because of Sammy's "babes", but while I don't know if Sammy was sexist, I know that was just the term some guys used back then. Many of them didn't mean anything negative by it, although some did, but a LOT of women sure were irked by it! |
