NEW YORK — Receiver Braylon Edwards, who was charged Tuesday with driving under the influence, will play in the Jets' game Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. When he gets on the field against New York's AFC East rival is up to coach Rex Ryan.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said team officials decided Edwards won't start but can play in Miami.

"Braylon's actions clearly come under the purview of the league's substance-abuse policy," Tannenbaum said. "This is going to have to run its course through the legal system, and any discipline that occurs will be by the league under that program."

Edwards, 27, was arraigned on drunken-driving charges after a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit when he was stopped in Manhattan at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, prosecutors said.

When Edwards left a charity event hosted by receiver Jerricho Cotchery on Monday and drove off in his SUV with four passengers — including Jets offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and defensive end Vernon Gholston, who were not charged — he declined to use a program available to all Jets called Player Protect.

Paid for by the team, the program provides 24-hour security and drivers. Former law-enforcement officers are available with a telephone call, as are SUVs, limousines and vans, each with satellite television, radio and navigation.

Edwards was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and driving while impaired, a violation. He is due back in court Nov. 9. He was released without bail in a case that could compound his legal troubles while he is on probation after a fracas in Cleveland last year.

What an idiot!! The team has a program to get players home safely and legally and he chooses not to use it? And instead, with twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system, he gets behind the wheel (with three passengers!!!) and drives!! He's lucky I'm not the coach of the Jets! He wouldn't be playing on Sunday! Or for a long while after that!! I hope the NFL deals appropriately with him!
