Thumbs down Was Endora One of TV's WORST Moms?

Endora - Bewitched (1964-1972). Samantha Stephens' mom may have thought she had her daughter's best interests at heart, but boy was she evil. Endora (Agnes Moorehead) was a mean old witch who constantly tormented her daughter and son in law with mean-spirited spells. She despised her son in law, Darrin, and did everything she could to try and split her daughter's marriage up—even going so far as to zap in a former boyfriend to tempt the happily married Samantha. Endora's nice side showed up once—when she was put under a love potion, but other than that she was one bad mama who lived to ruin her daughter's idyllic mortal existence.

Endora was definitely one bad Mama, but her antics trying to destroy Derwood and break up her daughter's marriage made the show funny!

I say Endora was a good mother because she really loved Samantha and anyone who messed with her better watch out. She only wanted the best for Sam, and thats why she was so opposed to her marriaged to Darrin because she felt witches and warlocks were superior to humans.

She was a nightmare as a mother in law though.

She loved Sam, but she showed a total lack of respect for her daughter's ability to make independent, adult choices in her life, particularly her choice of husband. It should have been obvious to anyone with any amount of sensitivity that Sam was very happy with Darrin, and yet she chose to believe that her daughter wasn't able to make the right choice in that matter. She failed to realize that her daughter's relationship was not about HER choice, but her daughter's and in doing so really showed an arrogance and self-centered quality that was unappealing to say the least.

Frankly, she's lucky that Sam was much more mature than she. Most daughters would have broken contact with her LONG ago yet Sam elected to remain patient and tolerant.

Agreed. Endora was a wonderful grandmama as well. Thankfully, Sam took after her Aunt Clara rather than her parents!!!!

I tink Endora THOUGHT she was a good mother- she did love her only daughter and wanted to the best for her- but what she thought was "best" wasn't what Samantha wanted at all. In that sense, she was a bad mother- constantly insulting her daughter's choice in husband, turning him into things, and making Sam decidedly unhappy.

She was an excellent "grandmama," however.

I would say she was one of the worst mother-in-laws, not so much a "worst Mom".

I wouldn't say she's the worst mom...but she sure is the ugliest TV Mom I've ever seen!

I don't think she was the worst mother, she loved her daughter and may have thought Durwood took her away. She reminisced in one episode about how she and Samantha would fly to Paris for the weekend. She was a super Grandmother to Tabitha and Adam. I can think of one Mother who was the worst, that being Charlotta.
