It was kind of strange when they did that. They didn't want to have their image remain in the 70's with the the makeup and all, but when they took it off, they became just one more band in all the other "big-hair", ballad-y bands
of that era. It was kind of hard to imagine KISS without their makeup, and for
a while, they were able to flourish without it, and wrote some decent tunes like "Lick It Up", "Tears Are Falling", and others. It just wasn't the same as the 'Alive!' era, all the gut-busting anthems. They became a little too poppy during the 80's, and even Gene Simmons even admits regretting it. But they did what they had to do in the 80's, going makeup-less, to prove that it was the music that matters rather than the props, even though for a while. Did the makeup ADD that sort of edge during the 70's? Oh well, Gene and Paul were the only two original members left by 1983, though Vinnie and Eric had replaced Ace and Peter.

^ Then Vincent's stint with KISS didn't last long after this.

Replaced by one-album wonder Mark St. John and then with Bruce Kulick.

My opinion is that Kulick doesn't get enough credit for his stint with KISS; he's a very good guitarist. Some fans even say he's the better guitar player over Ace Frehley.

He participated on Paul Stanley's solo album Live to Win.

During the 90s, the Gene, Paul, Eric (Singer), and Bruce lineup wasn't at all bad.

Vinnie Vincent was often credited as being the guy who "saved" KISS after Ace Frehley left, but even though he was a great guitar player, he had a tremendous ego that gave the band problems. He was either fired or quit to be replaced by Mark St. John (RIP) who lasted only one album due to medical
issues.

Vinnie Vincent went on to form the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, which was briefly popular in the mid/late 80's until two members, Mark Slaughter and Dana
Strum became so incredibly fed up with him that they left the band to form Slaughter, where they found huge success.

Vincent later went back to working with KISS (though not as a member) when he blew it again with Gene Simmons. He broke off Vincent's relationship with the band again when Vinnie once again acted like an unprofessional egomaniac.

ABLAIRICAN PIE'S ROCK & ROLL HISTORY FUN FACTS:

Vinnie Vincent had a makeup design in the days before the band took off the makeup. What was his facial design?

^ Vincent was The Ankh Warrior and Carr was The Fox.

Yeah, Vincent had song writing credits on Revenge in 1992.

Even Gene Simmons said that he looked like an ugly Jewish woman without his makeup on. (Really, he said that....)
