Movie Reviews: Alpha And Omega


Alpha and Omega, the critics suggest, is barely a step above the familiar fare found most hours of the day on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel or on just about any broadcast network channel on Saturday morning.

Except that it’s in 3D. And people in the industry will be waiting to see the results, which should indicate whether the 3D technology applied to what is widely regarded as a mediocre animated film can substantially boost box-office results.

Several critics are suggesting that families taking it in over the weekend ought to save their money and head for theaters showing it in 2D. None are welcoming its arrival and some are expressing unrestrained contempt for it.







A particular case in point is Kyle Smith, who writes in the New York Post:

“Alpha and Omega delivers animation abomination. It’s an ugly, laughless 3-D cartoon about wolves that is so wussified and stupidified that it’ll bore kids and make their adult minders wish they’d done something comparatively interesting, like cleaning the gutters in the rain.”






Mike Hale of the New York Times likes the backgrounds, which he says, “occasionally achieve a touch of grandeur.”

However, he quickly adds, “that’s about the best that can be said for it.”






Claudia Puig of USA Today has a three-letter word to describe the movie about a couple of young wolves in love: “bad.”






But Michael O’Sullivan in the Washington Post begs to differ. It “isn’t so much howlingly bad as it is howlingly boring. It’s ‘The Call of the Mild.’”




Tom Russo in the Boston Globe gives the movie probably its most favorable review. It’s “sweet,” he says, “if not fresh.”
