There was animosity between "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie",(or was there any at all?)got me to thinking:How many guest stars appeared on BOTH "Bewitched"and "I Dream of Jeannie"?I know of a few:Bill Daily (Capt./Maj.Roger Healy of "I Dream of Jeannie")did,(he never appeared on "Bewitched" after the black and white Christmas first season 1964 episode "A Vision of SugarPlums",but this was BEFORE his appearing on "I Dream of Jeannie"),Herb Voland,J.Pat 0'Malley,and (surprise surprise)Dick Sargent(Darrin #2).

Here's some info. I don't know what personal/professional feelings were involved, but here are guest stars that appeared on both shows as well as similar plotlines in individual episodes.

And,since Elizabeth Montgomery, was one of the brains behind "Bewitched",what was her reaction when she learned that Dick Sargent(Darrin #2)was on "I Dream of Jeannie",or did it make any difference? And by the way, catlover, thanks for the information.I appreciated it.

I'm sure Elizabeth Montgomery had far more important things to think about and or worry about than if any of the Bewitched cast crossed over to Jeannie for guest appearances.

I purchased the audio interview Herbie J. Pilato did with Elizabeth Montgomery for his "Bewitched" book. In it Elizabeth says herself she was initially "annoyed" with Sidney Sheldon at him doing the show. Apparently Sheldon met with her and William Asher at the Beverly Hills Hotel and they discussed I Dream of Jeannie. She also said that she had NOTHING against Barbara, Larry Hagman, or any of the cast. H.J. Pilato did say to her that Sol Sacs (who wrote the pilot for Bewitched) was approached by Screen Gems to come up with another show about a witch for another network due to the enormous popularity and success of Bewitched. He told them he had already done a story about a witch and wasn't interested. Then they went to Sidney Sheldon, who was already interested in doing a series about a FEMALE genie after seeing The Brass Bottle that year (1964 - Berle Ives played the genie and Barbara Eden played Tony Randal's fiancé.) I Dream of Jeannie was inspired by this movie as Bewitched could be said to have been inspired by I Married a Witch and / or Bell, Book and Candle - Sol Sacs speaks about Bewitched and these two films in the E! True Hollywood Story on Bewitched - incidentally he also states Screen Gems also owned those two films - hence they wouldn't be sued for doing Bewitched. I doubt Elizabeth Montgomery cared about guest stars - especially since Barbara Eden's own husband at the time, Michael Ansara, guest starred as "Rufus the Red" in season 3 of Bewitched. Only a few weeks earlier he had guest starred on I Dream of Jeannie as "The Blue Djinn" in the 2nd season opening episode. I had the pleasure of getting to see the cast of I Dream of Jeannie a few weeks ago at Dragon Con. People were allowed to go to the microphone and ask questions. I actually asked the last question (among a few others) which was about the Bewitched "controversy." The question I asked was whether any of the cast members remembered any "competitive animosity" toward anyone from the Bewitched cast and crew. Larry Hagman stated that they worked across the hall from them and never saw them. Bill Daily didn't remember anything. Barbara said she saw Elizabeth in the makeup room and she was always very nice. Larry pointed out that a lot of what people may have heard was made up by the press to sell papers / magazines. Also, my friend who I have known 18 years, I met Barbara initially through backstage many years ago, who speaks to her via the phone occasionally, and was commissioned to paint a bottle for by her publicist (for magazine photos promotional tours, etc. - since of course she didn't travel with her original bottle - the only one known to exist from the show) told me an interesting story Barbara shared with him. He asked her about all the Bewitched "controversy" hype. She told him that she never knew of anything. She also told him that she and Elizabeth used to sit and talk about their kids, etc. on the Screen Gems lot in between filming. Further, Barbara told him of a story when Elizabeth gave her some of her maternity clothes from when she was pregnant (from her first pregnancy) one year earlier. Hopefully all of this helps clear up any questions on this topic. PS: One person at Dragon Con asked Barbara who would win if Jeannie Nelson and Samantha Stephens ever got into a fight using their powers. Barbara's response, "I think it would be a draw."

Plus, let us not forget that Bill Daily appeared on Bewitched as Billy Mumy's adopted father in the first season's Christmas episode. He did a great job!!

That's right, he did! Also, Sandra Gould appeared as Tony Nelson's maid in the first season of I Dream of Jeannie in the episode entitled 'The Yacht Murder Case' (she played Mrs. Flaherty). She unknowingly lets Jeannie out of the vacuum cleaner! The next year she would take over the role of Mrs. Kravitz sadly after the untimely death of Alice Pierce. |
