Very interesting indeed, because usually when a kid is brought in, it is because the series is getting old and they want to reintroduce the "cuteness" factor. In Season 3, Family Ties was still young & fresh and in its prime. It is now obvious to me that Andy wasn't a way to stave off a ratings decline or was it???

Andy was introduced to Family Ties because Meredith Baxter Birney became pregnant in real life and the producers chose to write the pregnancy into the show.

During seasons 3 & 4 twin infants played Andy. At the beginning of Season 5 they introduced Brian Bonsall who played Andy from Season 5-7.
