and Jerry Van Dyke was wanted for the role of Gilligan, but he read the script for the pilot and called it "the worst piece of crap I ever saw!"

and the reason Carrol O'Conner was replaced was because they thought audiences would feel sorry for Gilligan whenever the skipper yelled at him.
