Real McCoys Recognition - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I've always felt that The Real McCoys has never gotten the recognition that it deserves. The stories were warm, wholesome and funny and in the end, what was good and right seemed to come out on top. Walter Brennan played a great role as did Richard Crenna. I think the show(s) even stand up now - if only they could be seen on TV somewhere, anywhere.

Has anyone ever thought that "The Beverly Hillbillies" was a copycat of this series? It was also a family from a rural area moving to California although they had a "Granny" doing the comedy instead of a "Grandpa". I've always questioned how that show shot to the top of the ratings instead of The McCoys. Maybe because it was on CBS rather than ABC which back then seemed to have more TV affiliates and stations available on VHF. Just a few thoughts of mine.

While The Real Mccoys were never ranked #1, they were ranked in the top 10 during the late 50's on ABC. That was pretty good as ABC didn't have many top 10 hits back then. I agree with you. The show holds up quite well today. I've always been a big Walter Brennan fan and Dick Crenna was good in everything he was ever in. If only a network would pick it up. I haven't seen it since the 90''s when TNN aired it.

I have been watching the show on COZI tv and have never figured out just what the opening song lyrics are. Can't make out parts. I did think they should had Luke and Kate parents to Little Luke and Hassie. Richard and Kathy's character look to be early to mid 30's and wasn't Hassie about 14. I do love Walter's facial expressions at stunned situations.

This is what I hear when I see the show on Cozi. I do see Walter looking to the audience in one seasons opening credits and other seeing he is coming through the living room door.
The line I could never make out was the His grandson Luke ???, and then I made out OLd Grandpappy Amos.

At the conclusion of the show during its ABC-TV Network run there were these lines sung by a male voice over fiddle music:

Week after week you're gonn'a be showed another human episode of Grandpappy Amos and the girls and the boys of the family known as the Real McCoys.

The Real McCoys was a down to earth show of what people were like from rural areas after the war. The actors were believable.
I happened to live in the town Lydia Reed was from when the show was on the air. Her mother was a hairdresser and cut my mom's hair. She was a character and very proud of Lydia.
