Question Did The Monkees Really Turn Down A Future #1 Hit Song?

I read somewhere that Davy Jones refused to record a future hit song because he was tired of the Monkees being considered a "bubble gum" band. Is this true? Did it lead to dissension amongst the band?

Hello my friend....Have you been reading the NY Post again?...lol....still waiting for Keith Obermann to be cancelled.....lol.....here are the facts.....which I thought have been commonly known and talked about in just about every monkees bio.....During the first two albums, they were under complete control of Don Kirschner, he wanted them to record "Sugar, Sugar"..(he eventually gave it to The Archies and it was sung by Ron Dante).....they all were against recording it for some reason....Nesmith started a coo against Kirshner and they won and created the third album "Headquarters" and the hits continued without Kirschners' supervision.

Mike Nesmith started a coup against Don Kirshner not a coo!

sorry my very minor spelling error was the only thing you took away from my entire factual story and answer to Brians question....btw...my computer is sometimes very slow and when typing coup...only the "c" came up (a common problem for some) as you wait for the rest of the letters to come up, people sometimes hit them again, such as another "o"...I don't know what happened to the "u" & "p", I can't believe I have to explain this, no wonder why so many posters give up on helping with giving real answers to members because the only reaction they get are off topic posts or minor silly reactions...my best to all and much love, BTW feel free to spend as much time as you want correcting all my real and innocent spelling errors...lol.....

Frankly I dont blame the Monkees for turning down that tune. In my opinion that is one of the worst records ever made. Don Kirshner is pretty full of himself, he likes to brag in interviews that after he was fired the hits for the Monkees stopped. That was in the spring of 1967, and the Monkees continued to have hits for another year without Kirshner.

Actually according to the Sandoval book, the song wasn't Sugar Sugar it was a song called Sugar Man. One of those urban legends that has perpetuated for years.

And...I don't think Davy would've turned any such thing down. He was the only one who was still recording with Kirshner and staying true to the projects origins when the other three began work on Headquarters.

Who knows, they probably switched at the right time when you see the results of those New York sessions. Such drek as If I Learned to Play the Violin and Mustang where nowhere near the hits on the first two albums. Maybe quality suffered because there was so much fighting therefore creating a distraction.

I remember hearing that song on the ARCHIE'S comic strip tv show which was geared for preteens. For a preeteen I liked it. It still not bad for me but it can get over played which can be tiring to hear.
