Perhaps Jan Brady said it best back in 1969. “Well, all day long at school I hear how great Marcia is at this or how wonderful Marcia did that,” was she acting bratty or did she have a valid point? Would you consider Jan to be a spoiled girl?

Yes she did have a valid point. Marcia and everyone she was the cat's meow!
The only episode where I thought Jan was a total brat was when she thought she didn't have enough privacy and thought she was entitled and when she didn't get her way she wanted to be the only child. As Greg said, they all had to share everything. |

I always think of her as a confused middle child with a lot of growing pains.

She was emotional and over-reacted a lot.
We really didn't see most of Marcia's achievements, so we don't have a history of Marcia doing all these great things and Jan being left out. That episode just kind of picked up there. We never saw Marcia on the debating team, even though she had a trophy for it. We never saw how hard Marcia supposedly worked to become editor of the school newspaper. All we knew was that she wanted to be editor, and then BAM... she's editor. There's obviously a whole history of achievement there that we never really saw. Marcia's trophies included an outstanding citizenship award and something that looks like a volleyball trophy, plus a couple of "first place" ribbons. When Carol said something to Jan about how Marcia "should have more to show for it" since she was a couple of years older, that didn't do very much good. Jan would have had to win a lot of awards over the next two years to catch up to Marcia's accomplishments. We never saw Marcia lording her achievements over Jan. Jan just got upset because her teacher kept comparing her to Marcia. Understandable. |
