Question Do You Think 'CPO Sharkey' Failed Because Don Rickles Was Unlikable?

Sure, Rickles was/ is a very successful insult comic, but did that cause him not be universally liked by TV audiences? Or was the material just not strong enough?

This was Don Rickle's best tv show. I'm not really sure why it didn't take off. I know during the second season, it replaced Sanford Arms so Friday night on NBC wasn't that great at the time. I guess maybe Don Rickles is also an aquired taste too. He might not be for everybody.

Cool

I think it was the material not Don. Don may be an insult comic but he has a rare gift for telling insult jokes without being mean or hurtful. As a result he is one of the most loved and respected people in show business. People consider it a compliment and an honor to be insulted by Don Rickles.

The show actually had a nice little run but just didn't appeal to women. It was only watchable to men which is probably why it didn't last.

I just think the show didn't have a mass appeal. I was a unsual teenager so I liked the show but i don't think the show grabbed the attention of

teens
women
seniors
kids

men 25-49 or men in the military

Do you think those particular groups didn't relate to the show because there were no teens, women, seniors, or kids in the cast?

Never even heard of this show. What was it about, when did it air, and why was it axed?

With Don you would think it would've been a hit!

It was a military company like Gomer Pyle and aired from 1976 to 1978. It was axed because at the time it was NBC's only hope for success and could not pull in the ratings. The show did well as a mid season replacement from Dec of 76 to May 77 but in the fall of 1977 the show could not get it done.
