Hey, I just got to wondering. I just watched the episode "Ragtime Band" last night in season 6 and got to wondering. This is the episode where Lucy, Fred, Ethel, and Little Ricky try to put together their own band and this is one of my favorite episodes of the series.
Well there is a scene in that episode I got to wondering about. Well it's where Ricky is on the couch trying to rest and each one comes in tells him about out their rehursel did. First it was Lucy, then it went to Ethel then to Fred. Now Little Ricky comes in. Well Little Ricky tells Ricky that he doesen't want to play with Lucy, Fred and Ethel anymore because they don't play music as well as he does. Then Ricky tells him that it's not nice to be unkind to people. How come Ricky never fallowed his own advice many episodes before this one? There where number of episodes through out the series where Ricky didn't want to perform with Lucy because she had no tallent and he aways told her that she had no talent. For instence in the episode "The Benefit" when Ricky, Fred, and ethel start singing "By the light of the Moon" Lucy starts chimming in and they stop and walk away because they didn't want to sing with her because she didn't sing well. Shouldn't have Ricky fallowed his own advice to Little Ricky before? Maybe instead of not wanting to perform with Lucy because she had no talent couldn't he just tought her to sing better? In "The Lucy Show" Lucy Carmichael took singing lessons. Couldn't Lucy Ricardo had done the same thing? |

Ricky was a 'do as I say, not as I do' kind of parent.

In Ricky's defense, his acts at the club were his livlihood, and if he had paying customers, then his including Lucy would have been a harsh financial risk.
Now when Little Ricky said what he said, it may have been true, but he said it without the maturity to have restraint. As children usually do, they say what they think. The moral leaders had to then step in. All parents are hypocrites in one way or another, but that should not stop them from establishing barriers and teaching their kids right and wrong. If and when a parent slips, that means that the individual did wrong, and fell short of what is being right, yet he/she should continue to teach what's right, and get back on track to trying to follow it themselves. |
