A.J. Breaux

This was the case of a father who ran a clothing store. eventually he goes missing. his car was found. but no sign of AJ. his personal items were found tucked in the front seat. later on there were several sightings of AJ. he was acting as if he was being watched. he was seen in the company of shady individuals.

Lastly a creepy note was found. claiming he was drinking and accidently shot himself. someone claimed they pushed his body into the Bayou.

Does anyone have any theories? was this ever solved?

I don't know if this theory has ever been put forth in prior threads, but it's so obvious and plausible that it had to have been.

I haven't given it much thought until just now, but what if somebody approached A.J. and told him a personal secret of a criminal nature? As a leader of the local equivalent of A.A., Breaux would be in a position to discuss such matters with anybody who felt the need to get something off of their chest. After confessing to A.J., that person may have told somebody else who was also involved. Person #2 freaks out to the point where they feel that the only way to keep the secret safe is to silence A.J. Two people were last seen with A.J., so this scenario is quite plausible.

Another thought: How much did authorities look into other murders within a certain radius of A.J.'s hometown? If the above scenario is true, then Person #2 might have also disposed of the fellow who opened the can of worms by telling A.J. I'm sure all of this was looked into quite some time ago, however.

I actually don't think I've heard that idea before. Good theory! I know it's been theorized at A.J. might have gotten mixed up in crime, but no one who knew him really seemed to believe he was that type of person. However, his AA leadership would definitely put him in the position to potentially hear things from someone he wasn't supposed to hear. After all, I'm not sure if an AA leader is bound by the same oath of confidentiality as a priest or a psychiatrist.

Unlike many other missing person cases, I actually put a lot of stock in the eyewitness accounts of A.J. with the shady-looking men since they were reported by people who actually knew him personally. However, I do think the woman who saw him trying to sell frozen fish at her house was probably mistaken.

BTW, A.J. Breaux is the closest a person on UM has ever come to resembling someone I knew as I had a ninth-grade geography teacher who looked quite a bit like him. Of course, they definitely weren't the same person, but if he'd tried to sell me some fish, I probably would've called the tip line

That actually is a very good theory. It requires few other assumptions and is consistent with all the known facts.

The theory is so simple in nature that one can only assume that local LE came up with it themselves right from the inception of this case. It has to be a given that all of the AA-type group's members were questioned and cleared. Although it's more of a stretch, the last part of my theory might not have been looked into.

Maybe not; I'm not familiar with the internal working of AA meetings, but it's also possible that all the members might know know each other outside of the meeting sphere; alternatively, it could have been someone who attending few meetings who other members might not remember.

Those thoughts came to me as well. This took place in a fairly small Louisiana town. Chances are that outsiders to the meetings would have been remembered as opposed to forgotten. Also, if they were local, they would have been recognized and likely questioned. That leads me to believe that someone knew of A.J.'s position of guidance and leadership and may have approached him outside of the "group" in order to avoid witnesses.

I recall that a relative (niece/nephew?) posted on the board some time ago. It would be interesting to hear their take on this theory as it expands. For some reason, this has been one of the cases I've taken to heart--the case of a respected businessman finally patching up the holes in his past only to have this happen to him.

I also never put any stock in the "fish story".

I've been to AA NA and AlANON and the theory of a secret could be true I doubt very much it was said during group discussion. In AA one eventually gets a sponsor and that where this scenario plays out best its 1 on 1 so one would be more relaxed and might tell their sponsor a secret . It seem he took AA very seriously so I can only see him pleading for the AA member to make a mends for his issue but if it were a violent crime I can see him breaking promise if others were going to be hurt . I was in detox once and was talking to another patient and he told me all about how he got a ride with an older women and pulled a knife on her and got here money and was able to buy some primo crack cocaine needless to say my jaw was on the floor I don't think he thought I would shock and disturbed by it but I thought if I snitched know it was that fat kid he was talking to so these things do happen. I think AJ was killed and the letters were attempts to throw cops off the right track.
