6-year-old Central girl saves toddler's life

Alexis' mother, Heather Moore.

Central, TX (KTRE) – A six-year-old Central girl is now a hometown hero. Alexis Weeks saved a two-year-old little girl from drowning in a swimming pool. Alexis is a strong swimmer for her age. "Very good, everyone says I swim like a fish," she said. She's been swimming on her own for about two years. She's confident under water. "I'm going to show you my dive," she said as diving into the pool.

But no one could have guessed that dive would save the life of a two-year-old girl sinking to the bottom of a pool. Alexis says she knew exactly what to do. "I need to go get her," she said. Without hesitation, Alexis says she dove in the pool and rescued the little girl.

"Well I went under water and got her on my knee and holded her," said Alexis. Her mother, Heather Moore, says it happened in matter of seconds. She says the two year old's mother had just gotten her out of the pool and barely turned her back. "None of us even heard a splash and Alexis was in the in the water retrieving floats and stuff," said Moore. "The thing we heard next was coughing up water and Lexi was dragging the little girl over and we're like what just happened? It really happened fast."

Moore says her daughter practices retrieving things like dive sticks. She says that practice may have played a role in saving the toddler's life. "I learned from it to go under water, get it and hold my breath," said Alexis. Alexis was offered a reward for her bravery, but didn't take it. She says saving the girl's life was rewarding enough.

"After I saved her, her mom said go tell her daddy he owes you a $100 or something for saving her daughter's life, but I really didn't want it because I didn't want that much money," she said. Moore says she's so proud of her "little fish" turned big hero. "We have bragging rights to say that our daughter saved someone's life," she said. "We're really proud of that." Moore encourages all parents to teach their children how to swim at a young age.
