The village of Cridersville, Ohio, describes itself as "small town America at its very best." On Aug. 21, the town will honor the frontman for the 1980s heavy metal band Twisted Sister by changing its name to Snidersville. According to CNN, Dee Snider will embark on a motorcycle ride from Lima, Ohio, to the newly-named Snidersville to raise money for the March of Dimes. The town of 1,500 residents agreed to change the name for one day after Snider jokingly requested it do so on his nationally syndicated "House of Hair" radio show. "I've had many dreams and been lucky enough to have most of them come true, but I would never dare to dream of something like this," Snider stated. "Having a town change its name to mine -- even though it is changing only a few letters -- is one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me!" Founded in 1856 by Ephraim and Polly Crider, the village is located just west of Interstate 75 (at exit 118), halfway between Dayton and Toledo. For 20 years, Cridersville was a booming oil town -- until more crude was discovered in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1918, a trash fire got out of control and burned down all of the stores and homes on Main Street. Today the village holds several annual festivities, including a Firemen's Jamboree, a Halloween Parade and a giant Easter Egg Hunt. The Bikers for Babies event will raise money to help fight premature birth, which is the leading cause of infant death in the United States. Each year, more than a half a million babies are born too soon and those who survive often face a risk of lifelong health issues. Two of Snider's children were born prematurely. Today the singer and reality show star is the national spokesperson for March of Dimes Bikers for Babies, and has been taking part in annual charity rides for more than a decade. |
