Elbert Jovante Woods, the son of former Bengals star Ickey Woods, died Saturday night, three days after collapsing at his home from an asthma attack. He was 16.

Jovante, a student at Princeton High School, was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday after someone reportedly called 911 on his behalf. He was treated at the intensive care unit of the hospital, where he was placed on a ventilator. WKRC-TV in Cincinnati reported that he showed no signs of brain activity.

Jovante was about to begin his junior year at Princeton on Monday and play in his third season of varsity football at cornerback. He practiced with the varsity team earlier in the day Wednesday and left the school around 10:30 a.m., school spokesman Tom O'Neill told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

"According to his family, Jovante began to feel tightness in his chest before he collapsed," O'Neill told the Enquirer in a statement. Jovante had reportedly struggled with asthma attacks throughout his life.

Jovante, the second-youngest of Ickey Woods' six children, had excelled in the classroom with a 3.8 GPA and was described by O'Neill as "likable and well-respected as a kid can be."

Ickey Woods is currently the head coach of a women's full-contact football team, the Cincinnati Sizzle, and he also runs the Ickey Woods Youth Foundation.

I remember Ickey Woods from the late 1980s when they went to Super Bowl XXIII. It's too bad his son died!

Interestingly, Princeton was (and still is) a rival high school when I went to school. They were very tough (especially in football, having won over my alma mater every year I went there; they won every year between (and not including) 1968 and 1994; I graduated in 1990), and anytime my high school beat one of their teams it was a true red letter day.

This is so sad. I have asthma and back when I was in junior high, I'd have asthma attacks practically every weekend. I'd always end up in the ER. they knew me there. I wish someone would find a cure for this awful disease. My condolences to Ickey and his family. It's a terrible loss.
