In the link above is a newspaper article from 1982. In it Ted basically says he had no favorite episodes....yet and that he hated doing physical comedy on his show or didn't want it to be considered "jiggle tv" like 'Three's Company.' He really seemed from the article not too fond of his own show. |

Ted Knight was such a comic legend. It is too bad that he didn't realize how much he touched other people's lives just being who he was. He was my favorite actor on MTM and TCFC was one of my favorite shows too and he was a big reason for that. Not to mention his role in Caddyshack.

At least Henry Rush was a lot smarter than Ted Baxter (Ted K. was tired of playing a buffoon because I guess people began to think he really WAS like Ted B.
). Ted wore many college sweatshirts on TCFC - the majority were sent in to him by fans. An interesting thing is that Ted and his wife Dorothy became Christians under the guidance of Ted's long-time friend and TMTMS co-star, Gavin MacLeod and Gavin's wife Patti. Gavin even gave the eulogy at Ted's funeral (all this is mentioned in the MacLeods' memoir, Back on Course). Of course, who could forget Ted's appearance on the Love Boat as a rival cruise captain to Gavin's Captain Stubing?

I understand Ted did not want his character to be cartoonish or an idiot like Ted Baxter was. He wanted the show to be entertaining.
I understand the cast had a difficult time dealing with him. Especially him and Nancy Dussault did not get along well when she aired her issues about the show. It had the potential of being a great sitcom with a great cast but they wanted to make Lydia Cornell as the next Suzanne Somers. |
