As I Suspected, The Brenda Character Was Supposed to Get Her Own Spinoff From 'Rhoda'
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...r+brenda&hl=en
Just read an old article that Julie Kavner was going to get her own spinoff. The only thing I am wondering now is, why didn't it happen??? |

Good question!! But had the spinoff happened and become a huge hit, then maybe Julie Kavner wouldn't have been able to go on to her greatest professional success - The Simpsons!!

If you go through this message board, you'll see some of my postings in which there is some discussions about this. From what I recall (and I posted here a while back) some of the magazines - TVGUIDE, PEOPLE, US Weekly - had announced in their 'Fall Preview' that Brenda would be getting married in the fifth season, and she would be spun-off into her own show during February Sweeps (1979). One of the reports said she and Benny would be moving to one of the CT suburbs, not too far away from 'Rhoda' and 'Ida', who would 'probably visit from time to time'. The ste up would be Rhoda and Benny fitting in as newlyweds, surrounded by young couples with families. As we all know, we got as far as Brenda's engagement, and early wedding plans before 'Rhoda' got cancelled in the early part of Season 5...and 'Brenda' went down the drain with it. |

I always think a spinoff with Ida and Martin would have been a hit.
I was never a fan of the Benny character on Rhoda, didn't like the way he spoke to Brenda,Brenda got very dull with a regular boyfriend,a spinoff with Brenda on her own would maybe have worked but with the dull Benny,no. |
