"Sons of Anarchy" Cast On Emmy Snub: "F--- 'Em" -- TCA Report

If the cast of "Sons of Anarchy" seems as bad-ass in person than they are on their hit FX show, it's because they are. The refreshingly motley crew that took the stage this morning would seem to be more in place at a meeting of the show's motorcycle gang SAMCRO than on the stage of the Beverly Hilton's International Ballroom.

Which is why, when a critic asked them to talk about what they thought of being shut out during the Emmy nominations, Ron Perlman put his feelings succinctly: "F--- 'em."





Charlie Hunnam, who plays Jax Teller, was a little more elaborate in his explanation.

"I was really happy. I think it's all a crock of s--- and it's corrupting," he told the critics.

"I was happy we weren't on the receiving end of a force that can change the dynamic (of a show). All of that crap is secondary and unimportant but does have the potential to ruin a good thing. So as you said... f--- 'em."







Series creator Kurt Sutter was a little more diplomatic.

After mentioning how grateful he was that the show and Katey Sagal were nominated to TCA Awards -- it's always good to start with flattery, doesn't it? --


Sutter talked about what always struck him as odd about the Emmy process.

"Every year when the Emmys are announced, half the stories are about the nominations, and the other half are about the absurdity of the nominations and the snubs. It suggests to me that the system is somewhat flawed."





Sutter wouldn't reveal too much about what's going to happen in the third season of the show, only indicating that the Abel stoyline from last year "drives us through the entire season."

In essence, said Sutter, "I don't want to give it away, but the thing is in our seasons, the actual span of time within a season is very short, perhaps two to three.

Not a lot of time passes where you can have a lot of things unfold organically. It's concentrated period of time that feeds the sense of urgency of the tasks they have this season."







More tidbits:


-- One of the show's writers told Maggie Siff, who plays Jax's girlfriend Tara Knowles, that her character was the loneliest on television. Siff seems to be OK with that.

"My role as the outsider insider has been fascinating and gets better as the show progresses. In some ways Tara is in one way connected to the audience's conflicted relationship with these people who do bad things."







-- Sutter felt that, while the characters' actions are questionable, their motives are pure.

"It's a fairly dangerous world. I think their motivations, although the solution and their actions are quite often different than we'd choose, their motivations are the same as ours, protecting their family or hometown, keeping out someone who they think is a bad or worse influence."







-- Theo Rossi, who plays Juice, feels that "the best thing about that show is that it brought us together. We're a family on and off screen."

They ride together all the time, apparently.







-- Sutter on the restrictions of writing about a family of bad-asses on basic cable:

"With seven seasons on 'The Shield,' I got used to living creatively in those parameters and being challenged by those parameters rather than be handcuffed by them.

I'm used to having outlaws and criminals living in a world where the word 'f---' doesn't exist."
