If the Munsters thought Marilyn was the homely one of the family, why didn't Lily offer her some make-up tips, or give her a make-over?

I think it was more than they considered her homely. They seem to suggest that they thought Marilyn was deformed so they just accecpted her as is.

I think Marilyn was so different from the rest of the family that they considered her "beyond hope".

Actually, that The Munsters, take Marilyn in and except her unconditionally is heart-warming. She was family, and they always looked out for her. The Munsters were kooks, but they were a loving and loyal family, as much as The Waltons or The Ingalls!

Do they ever say what happened to Marilyn's parents? Did they pass away, or did they reject her because they couldn't deal with having such an ugly daughter?

To the best of my knowledge they never said anything about Marilyn's parents other than her mother was Lily's sister.

I think 'markway985' hit the nail on the head, about Marilyn's acceptance as being reflective of a lovinig and loyal family. Of course, Marilyn's 'appearance' as a recurring gag couldn't be explored too thoroughly, or it would fall apart altogether. In fact, I'm not sure, but didn't Marilyn's own self-consciousness about her 'unfortunate' looks somewhat fade away as a constant theme as the series progressed? Or perhaps that was just something that came across as the Marilyn character was perhaps de-emphasized a bit between the Owen and Priest episodes. I always got the sense that in the earlier Owen episodes, Marilyn's participation and integration into the plots was greater, and I wished that had been kept up. Both actresses were quite delightful in the role, and I was always left wanting to see more of them!

There were so many instances of Marilyn's beauty attracting outside people to the house -- you might say that having her as a family member helped the script writers engage the Munsters with the world around them.

Anyway, I wonder who would look better with a goth makeover, Beverly Owen or Pat Priest?

There was one episode where these "hillbilly" characters were on, and were totally at home in the Munsters house. Their son seemed interested in Marilyn and she in him. Maybe they should have hooked up.
