There appear to be some considerable comparisons between two situation comedies, M*A*S*H and Cheers, while there are also considerable differences.
* Both M*A*S*H and Cheers began in a year ending with a "2" and ended on a year ending in a "3". * Both ran for exactly 11 television seasons. * At first, both shows had low ratings, and the networks were poised to cancel them after one season. But because of the they were renewed for a second season and were pushed to main event status (being ranked in the Top 20 in the Nielsen ratings), and even ended their runs while still having main event status. * Both had top-rated series finales (M*A*S*H had 105,900,000 viewers and Cheers had 80,000,000). Any other comparisons of the two series? |

Both series had cast members leave and were successful in replacing their characters by introducing different characters with distinctly different characteristics. On M*A*S*H Trapper John McEntire, Frank Burns, and Lt. Col. Blake were replaced by B.J. Hunicutt, Charles Emerson Winchester III, and Col. Potter. On Cheers Diane Chambers and Ernie "Coach" Pantusso were replaced by Rebecca Howe and Woody Boyd.
