just watched this on VHS

anyone know of any update?? Joe Jones seems innocent.

Yeah, Joe Jones is completely innocent. I don't know what they said on the version you watched, but on the Spike version, Farina said he passed the polygraph test with flying colors. He truly did just witness that guy at the dumpster at night.

My observation: the person of interest/main suspect seen at the dumpster in the track-and-field outfit with the long-ish blonde hair and glasses (at least that's how the guy looked in the re-enactment) looks like the composite drawing of the man who was last seen with Megan Curl in her apartment the night she was found murdered in there after her place was set on fire.

It probably wouldn't be the same person of interest in the Sue Young Kim murder, since that was in New York City. But in the Megan Curl case, they did note that the night she was murdered, the people working at the bar she was at with him said that was the only night/time they have ever seen that guy there.

I think he is innocent to, although he did seem a bit odd like he wasn't all there. But in an amusing kind of way rather than a dangerous kind of way, probably a colorful character to hang around.

To me, it was ludicrous he was even considered a suspect. I think the reasons it turned out the suspected car he saw was eventually cleared was because he mistakened what the license plate was, or maybe the plate was recycled or stolen. Or he mistakened certain characters for another, like an "8" for a "B" or a "V" for a "U" or something like that.

Personally, I find it ludicrous that we still trust polygraph tests. That tells us absolutely nothing about the guilt or innocence of a suspect, and it's just proposed to see if the person will cooperate or not.

I'm not saying Joe Jones is a suspect, but something is fishy... I find it an incredible coincidence that Joe Jones might give a "wrong plate", yet find it on the exact same model of car that he reported but it's plain obvious it couldn't have been used for the murder because its motor engine was dead cold. Then, how did he see the car and its plate if it couldn't be there?

Agreed; it's understandable to some degree when they're used to determine an individual's willingness to cooperate with an investigation, but it's annoying when a viable suspect is all but ruled out because he passed one.

In this case, I think too much was made of the discrepancies in the license number. Possibly Jones got the vehicle make correct, but he was off on the license plate. I'm curious if they ever looked into the background of the owner of the car they did find -- was she acquainted with anyone who fit the description of the guy allegedly dumping the body?

It's possible that this is someone who was already stalking Kim ( and may have been a tenant in her building or lived nearby) who found the perfect opportunity to subdue her. Or she was stalked while she was out shopping. His choice of apparel is pretty interesting; how many people are going to be worried about a guy wearing track clothes following you? It would be a clever way to appear 'busy' exercising while actually stalking women. Most people would simply assume he's working out and not have their guard up as much.

Yeah... I couldn't believe it when he admitted to that! he was smiling like a kid whose hand got caught in the Cookie jar.

I mean what a total douche! not only does he look the other way when a suspicious character had blood on his clothes but recruits a buddy to look in the dumpster?? how unprofessional. I wouldn't be surprised if he did drugs. he just seems so out there.

Hmmm...the Joe theory is interesting. I for one take lie detector tests seriously, but it does seem odd he was at the right place at the wrong time...

I really don't think that Joe Jones was anything more than a witness. Had he been involved, he would've:

a. killed Su Ya, then dumped her in a dumpster in the area where he worked, something even the most clueless criminal would not do.
b. beyond that, he called attention to the body, going so far as to bring a friend over to the dumpster, as well as an ambulance driver--both things he wouldn't have done had he been guilty.

I think he simply walked up on the killer, took a bribe, got suspicious, and mis-read the license plate number or misidentified the car. Especially if the killer had stolen a license plate from another car, and Joe Jones mixed that up, it could make it very hard to find the car. I think the exchange student had nothing to do with it whatsoever.

Did anyone think the actor playing the killer in this segment looked like the killer in the Tom Johnson segement?

I thought it looked like the same actor, even though the suspect in the Sue Young Kim case looked more Asian.

It wasnt the same actor. "Tom Johnson" was played by Stephen Quadros, a martial arts actor and commentator. A friend of mine actually emailed him about the experience, said it was a weird job.

Considering Joe Jones a suspect is ludicrous, IMO. He admitted to taking a bribe from the killer. He was also at his job patrolling the area in which Su Ya's body was found. And Jones was the one who called the police. Do we really think Joe Jones is that stupid? Ok, let's say he was. Sometime during the day he meets Su Ya Kim, kills her for some unspecified reason, hides her body, and then decides to dispose of it while he's on the job patrolling a nearby building. Then he calls the police, makes his entire story up, and then just so happens to get a license plate to match the exact same make and model he described to police that night. Farfetched much?
