Thumbs down Oh How The Mighty Have Fallen: M. Night Shyamalan is Now Being Laughed At

Director M. Night Shyamalan may need to take his name out of his own movie trailer. When the promo for "Devil" -- which he produced -- played before a Friday night screening of "Inception" at the 34th Street IMAX theater, the crowd booed when the screen showed, "From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan." "Then everyone erupted in laughter," a moviegoer reports. Shyamalan directed "The Sixth Sense" but his subsequent pictures -- including "The Happening" and "The Village" -- have flopped. A rep for Universal had no comment.

That's a shame... I've seen the trailer for Devil, and it looks like it might actually be good...

His work usually seems to get mixed reviews. But for as many people who hate it, just as many enjoy it. I'm not really sure why the article refers to The Village and The Happening as "flops." Just because their success didn't compare to The Sixth Sense doesn't mean they flopped.

I guess flops because they didn't meet the expenses of the budgets they were given. That is my guess.

That's what I originally assumed, too, but I looked it up and both made more than their budgets.

I liked Sixth Sense a lot. Unbreakable was good, but not quite what it could have been. I did like Signs quite a bit, though the ending was illogical and had the wrong tone.

After that...well, The Village disappointed me quite a bit, and Lady in the Lake was one of the very few films I honestly could not finish I disliked it so much. I never saw The Happening, largely I have to admit, on the basis of terrible reviews.

I think the man is still quite talented but he really needs a home run to get back on the team. I've seen the trailer for Devil and honestly, it seems a bit silly. I won't judge it yet though; if people I trust say it's good I'll give it a whirl.

I guess one day you're the toast of the town, the next day you're just toast. He's not going to erase his name and use the Alan Smithee alias, is he?

Wouldn't it be funny if Alan Smithee won the oscar for best director? It would be fun to see how many directors would run up to the stage to accept the award!

The Happening is not worth it at all. It's one of the worst movies I ever saw. Plot is about wind that makes you commit suicide.

The only film of his that I haven't seen yet is The Lady in the Water, as well as his latest one The Last Airbender.

Alan Smithee said in an interview that he'd be too embarrassed to let M. Night use his name.

I didn't mind The Happening (what little Ive seen of it) but it was the acting that made me turn the channel (it was on HBO or something like that)

I wouldn't count him out.

The only movie I like a lot by him is The Sixth Sense.

Signs was good. Unbreakable had a lot going for it. The Village was a Twilight Zone episode trying to pass as a film. I didn't see THe Lady in the Lake, The Happening or The Last Airbender.

I know the guy has talent. He needs better people around him.
Or less people telling him all is grand. And less proclamations "From the mind.."

Funny, I would be inclined to agree with most that he is on a downward spiral.

But I have a feeling he will come up with something.
Don't know why.
