"The Big Bang Theory" Cast at Comic-Con: What Makes Them Geek Out?
by Laura Prudom
posted Jul 23rd 2010

Things were certified CRAZY at "The Big Bang Theory" panel this morning; not only was geek god Wil Wheaton in attendance to preside over the proceedings as moderator, the Barenaked Ladies were also on hand to perform the "BBT" theme tune live.

As Sheldon Cooper's arch-nemesis (himself), Wheaton knew exactly how to work the crowd: "I'm not actually an evil jerk, but I have a really good time playing one on 'The Big Bang Theory,'" he said by way of introduction, before bringing out Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg and creators Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre.

The biggest news of the panel was confirmation that "Blossom" star Mayim Bialik would return next season as a love interest for Sheldon, and Prady added that fans should count on Wheaton making a reappearance soon.

Here's the Barenaked Ladies' performance of the show's catchy theme song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YLrR02tvw_8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YLrR02tvw_8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

The ever-curious Wheaton wanted to know what the cast went all geeky for, and the responses were all over the map:

Nayyar: "Badminton."

Parsons: "I'm geeky for talk radio - I'm geeky for listening to people ask questions and get interesting answers. I guess that doesn't make me geeky so much as certifiable."

Galecki: "I geek out over work and "True Blood" - and GI Joes."

Wheaton was blown away by how much everyone really, REALLY likes each other -- "Every time there's a break in filming, you don't run off to your trailers, you run to the ping pong table."

He went on to gush about how genuinely supportive the cast are, especially in terms of welcoming him to the show and making him feel like part of the family.

On the subject of the show's nerd quota and just how challenging it was to sell such a geek friendly show to the network, Prady insisted, "there was never discussion of the show being too geeky with CBS."

Lorre agreed, "CBS got the show right away and were very supportive."

When asked about improvisation, Helberg (who has stand-up experience) said,

"I trust the writers and actors so much I don't ever see any need to do anything to tweak anything. I'm never left out with my pants down on set. Heck, I can't even get my pants on the show off, they're so tight!"

Wheaton asked Parsons what it's like to play someone so different from him as a person.

"It's fulfilling and surprisingly easy because of the writing, because it's right there on the page. You get bored of the job or don't do a good job if the writing's not up to par.

I don't feel like I have to make up a bunch of crap - I'm certainly not going to make up any lines,
" he laughed.

Will "Big Bang Theory" ever do an episode where the cast is at Comic Con, an audience member asked? It seemed to be a popular idea.

Unfortunately Prady pointed out that it would be too costly to go on location to San Diego, and instead suggested that the whole audience should come and visit Burbank to film with them.

The fan-favorite word and Sheldon's catchphrase "Bazinga" comes from a writer from the second season: it's apparently his personal word for 'gotcha'.

The hilarious panel was rounded out by a question regarding the cast's ideal super-powers and superhero names. Answers ran the gamut from hilarious to bizarre, as was to be expected with such an eclectic cast:

Galecki: "Flight and I'd change my name to Dave Grohl"

Parsons: "I would be able to cause instant world peace and I'd be called Jimmy Peace."

Helberg: "Not Moist [after his sidekick character in 'Dr. Horrible'] -- I think it would be cool if I could fly but I didn't tell anybody, and joined a ballet or basketball team and just hung in the air a second too long, and people would be amazed. I'd be called Lightfoot!"

Navyar: "I'd like the ability to make things awesome - I'd be called Awesome Man/"
