One-The theme(which was slower and more romantic,of sorts)used in ALL of the Dick York as Darrin episodes -This was used in seasons 1-5.-Or Two-The faster,speeded-up theme that was used in the Dick Sargent as Darrin episodes used in seasons 6-8?I liked theme one.Theme 2 was okay, but theme one was more romantic.

Actually there were not two themes but 8 of them, one different one for each season as they were all a little bit or in some cases a lot different then the other seasons opening themes were.
Only Season One had the slow romantic opening theme and at times some channels used it for all the Dick York seasons syndicated versions, most used the much faster & snapper season 3 theme for the first 5 seasons in syndication, Season two was much faster & upbeat. If you listen closely the opening theme in Season 2,3 & 6 had a very snappy & up tempo musical bent & had an unusual amount of chimes & sound effects compared to the other seasons themes, for these reasons i like the themes of them the best, especially season 2 & 6. I have all the opening themes as originally seen & heard for all 8 seasons & did a comparative sound test as to how they compared to my ear. Larry Tate ![]() Quote:

Larry, I saw Bewitched in syndication on many stations at one time or another between the mid 70s and late 90s. The first season theme was used for EVERY Dick York episode I ever saw in syndication. Every one. I would conclude that use of the third season theme in syndication must have been very rare considering I never heard it at all until I had the internet.

I liked the jazzy, swinging arrangement of Season 2 the best.

Well i saw it in syndication on TBS,WGN,KTLA,KSWGN,WSBK,N@N & Hallmark in the 1990's and the season 3 through 5 seasons always had the season three theme opening only.
The Season One very slow very romantic theme was used by N@N when they only showed the first two seasons. The others i mentioned except for Hallmark only showed seasons 3 through 8 in those days. Hallmark used the season 3 opening as well for seasons 1 & 2 which were colorized by then. I think you may have the season one & three theme opening confused with each other as the Season one theme was very rare in it's use, N@N were the only one to use it. Larry Tate ![]() Quote:

As well when you think of it the slow relaxed romantic theme music in the animated opening was in Black & White only never in Color, so it could not have been seen by anyone in the season 3 through 5 Color episodes unless you had an animated Black & White opening and then an in Color actual episode, which i am sure was never seen by anyone in that way.

I assure you I have nothing confused with anything else. Sounds like I'm old enough to remember what you are not and had simply stopped paying attention by the time you had started to. In the olden days, the black and white episodes were syndicated right along with the color ones and there were only two openings used: the first season's for the Dick York years and the sixth season's for the Dick Sargent years.
I was under the impression that the DVD issues follow this pattern exactly so I don't know why you doubt it. Don't doubt it. I was there, you were not. |

Actually i was there watching during the original run of the show in both Prime Time & syndicated daytime from season two on.
So i was there as it happened & saw & i repeat, the slow relaxed romantic theme music in the animated opening was in Black & White in Season One only and never in Color, so it could not have been seen by anyone in the season 3 through 5 Color episodes unless you had an animated Black & White opening and then an in Color actual episode, which i am sure was never seen by anyone in that way. Did you see the animated opening in B/W & then the rest of the episode in Color, i don't think so. Even the season two theme was snappier & faster then the season one theme but not as fast as it started to become in Season 3 onwards. The DVD uses the Season three Theme on all of the first 5 seasons, then the season 6 theme & animated opening for the last 3 seasons of the DVD sets. They just gray scaled the season three theme to Black & White to use on the first two seasons B/W versions for the DVD sets. Larry Tate ![]() Quote:

You are simply wrong. Ridiculously wrong, in fact, because you have so far not picked up on the fact that the recollection of the OP is the same as mine. That's not a coincidence, that's Larry in error.
Black and white opening to the color episodes? HAHA, hardly! This is what they did...pay attention and follow along... Season three's animation--in color, of course--was overdubbed with the season one theme. That's what they used for all the Dick York color episodes. A gray-scale version of same was used for black and white episodes. Do you read roman numerals? Before the advent of episode guides on the net, EVERY Dick York episode that ran in syndication appeared to have been made in 1966 as a result of the way they homogenized the opening. Well, OK, there were extremely rare exceptions when first season episodes with an edited opening were spotted. Once in a blue moon you could catch a black and white episode with a 1964 date, otherwise all black and white and color episodes with Dick York said "(c)MCMLXVI" in syndication. Season three animation...season one theme...gray scale of same for black and white. That is what the OP recalls for Dick York episodes, and that is what I recall. That's a 2-1 score so far. How about it, lurkers? What say you? |

Sheesh don't get your Panties in a Bunch, this is not a popularity contest where votes count, it is what it is so your reference to the OP is irrelevant.
One they didn't do grey scale back then, they didn't have too as they had color openings ready to go for the color episodes that they simply used in syndication. The fact that you feel the need to direct your response directly at me rather then stick to the facts of the matter at hand speaks volumes. The conclusions state by you are simply wrong, simple as that. Your just being argumentative for the sake of being so, that is a pointless excercise to become involved with. I am just talking about the facts as they exist on the ground, it is what it is, saying otherwise will not change that fact. By the way all the N@N B/W versions have "(c)MCMLXIV" on my Super VHS tapes that i have of all the N@N episodes for the first two seasons, so much for your grey scale theory re seaon 3 color openings used for the first two seasons re the syndicated versions of the first two seasons. The ones i have from Hallmark of the first two seasons colorized say "(c)MCMLXVI" as well the themes used in Hallmark version of #39 for example had the same theme as 16mm prints of Season Three Episodes and different then the season one N@N B/W themes which were slower & gentler as heard in the N@N B/W versions. So as Liz said in interview once of someone, you are Wrooooooooooooong ![]() Larry Tate ![]() Quote:

lol, links to original network openings won't do a lot to settle that debate, but they're great for deciding which theme is best. Thanks for posting them.

Sure. It's just a shame that more sponsor openings/closings weren't used in the DVDs. I think that would've been great - as well as the Chevy commercial starring the casts of both Bewitched and Bonanza (!!).
